Idoma Traditional Council Orders Herdsmen to Vacate Benue South Farmlands Amid Rising Insecurity
In a decisive move aimed at curbing escalating violence and restoring safety to farming communities, the Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) has ordered all herdsmen to immediately vacate farmlands in Benue South Senatorial District. The directive comes in the wake of a spate of deadly attacks by suspected armed herders across the region.
The resolution was passed during an emergency meeting of the Council, presided over by the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Dr. John Odogbo, and attended by Local Government Council Chairmen from across Idoma land. The meeting took place in Otukpo, the traditional headquarters of the Idoma people.
In a statement signed by the Council Secretary, Uloko Adegbe, the IATC expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives caused by the attacks, describing them as “heinous acts of violence” that have devastated communities and instilled fear among farmers.
“It is therefore unanimously agreed that the state government should discuss and prevail on Fulani herdsmen to vacate all farmlands to enable farmers to resume their agricultural activities without threat or intimidation,” the Council declared. “All armed herders must be persuaded and directed to leave the area immediately to prevent further conflicts.”
The resolution follows a similar order issued recently by the Tiv Area Traditional Council (TATC), which also demanded the immediate exit of herders from Tiv territories within the state.
The Idoma Royal Fathers commended government efforts to address the security crisis but stressed that more strategic action and stronger political will are urgently needed. They called for increased security patrols, the deployment of additional personnel to high-risk areas, and conflict resolution training to deter future violence.
Reiterating the validity of the Benue State Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, the Council urged security agencies to enforce the law strictly and prosecute violators without discrimination. “No one is above the law,” the statement affirmed.
The IATC further called on residents and community stakeholders to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity promptly to security agencies.
Local Government Chairmen were also charged with ensuring full compliance with the resolutions, while the Council pressed the Federal and State Governments to demonstrate the necessary political will to reinforce security and uphold the rule of law across Benue State.
With farming season underway, the Council emphasized the urgency of reclaiming farmlands and restoring peace to avert a food crisis and further displacement of rural communities.
