Bianca Ojukwu Builds Memorial for Bruce Mayrock, the American Who Dïed for Biafra.

‎Bianca Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and widow of the late Biafran leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has honored the memory of Bruce Mayrock, the 20-year-old American student who died protesting the Biafran genocide.

Mayrock set himself ablaze in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York on May 30, 1969, in a desperate attempt to draw global attention to the atrocities being committed during the Nigerian Civil War.
‎According to Bianca, Ojukwu was deeply pained by the lack of global recognition of Mayrock’s sacrifice and repeatedly expressed his desire to immortalize the young man.
‎In his final days, he confided in her, saying, “If I don’t make it, do what you can… our people must never forget.” Moved by his words, Bianca committed herself to fulfilling his wish
‎Years later, she established the Bruce Mayrock Memorial Building a three-story edifice featuring a memorial hall, exhibition gallery, and conference center.

‎She also founded the Bruce Mayrock Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at empowering youth through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, leadership development, and peace building.

‎Bianca said Mayrock’s act of ultimate sacrifice must never be forgotten. She described the foundation as a symbol of courage and a reminder of the impact one individual can have in the fight against injustice.
