Tragedy on Patrol: Police Inspector Shot Dead by Stray Bullet During Adamawa Stop-and-Search Operation

Tension and grief have gripped the Adamawa State Police Command following the tragic death of Inspector Musa Kampani, who was gunned down by a stray bullet during a routine patrol along the Song–Gombi Road in Song Local Government Area.

According to top police sources, the incident happened around 11:00 a.m. on May 25, during a stop-and-search operation by the Safer Highway Patrol Team. The officers had intercepted a tricycle rider carrying a Dane gun while dressed in civilian clothing. When questioned, the suspect reportedly failed to prove his identity or justify possession of the weapon.

Events took a deadly turn when members of the Hunters and Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) suddenly stormed the scene and allegedly began shooting into the air, leading to panic and confusion.

Amid the chaos, Inspector Kampani was fatally hit by a stray pellet. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Song swiftly led a team to the area and rushed the wounded officer to Cottage Hospital, Song, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

In a swift response, the JTF Commander, Adamu Zubairu, was arrested, and security operatives are now on the hunt for others who fled the scene. The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has launched a full-scale probe to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Inspector Kampani’s body has been deposited in the morgue, and his colleagues are mourning a man described as diligent and courageous.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for discipline and accountability among local security operatives, especially in tense patrol zones.
