Labour Party Suspends Abia Governor Otti, Senators Nwokocha, Kingibe, Others Over Anti-Party Activities
The Labour Party has announced the indefinite suspension of six prominent members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senators Darlington Nwokocha, and Ireti Kingibe, for alleged anti-party activities. The suspension, which also affects Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi, was ratified by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
The decision follows a probe by a five-member Disciplinary Committee, established on May 2, 2025, and led by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, to investigate claims of misconduct. In a statement signed by National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party confirmed that the suspensions take immediate effect, barring the affected members from participating in any Labour Party activities.
“The Disciplinary Committee has concluded their assignment and submitted their report to the party leadership. The National Executive of the party met today, May 7th, 2025, and after exhaustive deliberation, ratified the recommendation as submitted,” the statement read. It listed the suspended members as: Dr. Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi.
The Labour Party clarified that Nenadi Usman, a supporter of its 2023 presidential candidate and member of the Obidient Support group, was not suspended as she is not a registered party member. The statement accused Usman of lacking the moral authority to comment on corruption, referencing her alleged plea bargain with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and asset forfeitures. It further challenged her to explain the sources of her wealth, including a radio station in Kaduna, properties across Nigeria and abroad, and companies in Cameroon.
Reaffirming its independent stance, the Labour Party declared it would not enter any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections. “Labour Party intends to prosecute the 2027 general election as a standalone party, and no further discussion will be entertained on this matter,” the statement concluded.
The suspensions mark a significant development in the party’s internal dynamics as it prepares for future electoral contests.
