Ghana's former late president JJ Rawlings honoured in Burkina Faso during ceremony held by Ibrahim Traore

During a moving tribute to Thomas Sankara in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Ghana’s late president Jerry John Rawlings was also remembered as a revolutionary figure who embodied bold, people-first leadership.

The event, primarily focused on Sankara’s legacy, organically extended its appreciation to Rawlings, whom many consider his ideological brother.

Ghanaian attendees, including former government officials, academics, and activists, took moments during the ceremony to reflect on Rawlings' contribution to African unity and accountability in leadership.

Some Burkinabè speakers openly praised Rawlings’ fearlessness, comparing his political courage to that of Sankara.

The shared homage highlighted the deep ties between both nations — forged in fire, rebellion, and a belief that African leaders must serve, not rule.
