FG's Delay Tactics Spark Outrage: Federal Workers Demand Immediate Payment of N175,000 Wage Award Arrears

A storm is brewing across the federal civil service as frustration reaches a boiling point over the Federal Government’s continued delay in paying the N175,000 wage award arrears owed to workers. The arrears, covering five months from April, remain unpaid despite multiple promises and assurances from the government.

Workers, who had initially welcomed the wage award as a palliative to cushion the rising cost of living, now feel betrayed by what they describe as the government's “delay tactics.” Many believe the delay is deliberate and aimed at avoiding full payment of the arrears.

“The government cannot keep making promises without action. We have bills to pay, families to support, and responsibilities to meet. These arrears are not a favour—they are our right,” a senior civil servant lamented.

Labour unions have also weighed in, warning that the government’s lack of transparency and commitment is eroding trust between civil servants and the state. They insist that any further postponement could trigger nationwide protests or industrial action.

To ease the mounting tension, workers are now demanding an immediate one-off payment of the full N175,000 arrears. According to them, staggered payments or vague timelines will only deepen the mistrust and hardship faced by workers already struggling under economic pressure.

The government is yet to release an official statement on when the arrears will be paid, further fueling uncertainty and frustration. As pressure mounts, all eyes are now on the presidency and the Ministry of Finance to act swiftly and decisively to resolve the impasse before it spirals into a larger crisis.
