Senator Abba Moro moves motion on herdsmen attacks on Benue South communities
The senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Moro PhD, on Thursday alerted the Nigerian Senate and the world at large the persistent attacks on Benue South communities by herdsmen, leaving in their wakes loss of many lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
Senator Moro, while moving his motion on the floor of the senate decried the sustained attacks on his constituents, the latest being the attacks on Akpete and Ojantelle communities of Apa LGA, and called on the senate to urgently intervene with a view to nipping the ugly situation in the bud for his people to live and do their businesses freely without let and hindrances.
The motion, titled "Herdsmen Attacks On Akpete/Ojantele Communities Of Apa Local Government Area of Benue South Senatorial District: Urgent Need For Senate's Intervention" read in part;
"The Senate;
"Notes with grave concern the attacks of suspected Fulani herdsmen on two communities of Akpete and Ojantele of Apa Local Government Area of Benue South Senatorial District of Benue State on the 1st and 7th of May, 2025 respectively.
"Notes further with sadness that not less than thirteen persons who were moving about their normal businesses were mowed down by the marauders.
"Saddened that this is one in a series of attacks and kidnappings carried out by the herdsmen in communities in Benue South Senatorial District, leaving in their wakes loss of lives and wanton destruction of properties.
"More saddened that as at today, no single person, out of the perpetrators of the heinous attacks, has been apprehended.
"Accordingly, the Senate resolves to;
"1. Urge the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation of these dastardly attacks with a view to arresting the perpetrators;
"2. Urge the federal government to mount comprehensive surveillance at the affected areas to proactively detect and deter further future attacks;
"3. Urge the Nigeria Police and other relevant Security agencies, as a matter of national emergency necessity, to review their operational mechanism with a view to being more proactive;
"4. Request the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately mobilize relief materials to those many persons displaced by these recent attacks on Ojantele and Akpete communities;
"5. Request the senate to observe a minute silence in honour of the deceased persons."
All five prayers were granted by the senate and a One-minute silence, in honour of those killed in the recent and previous attacks, was observed by the senate.
