Please learn from Ibrahim Traore, stop feeding idle prisoners and let them work on farms – Ghanaian journalist begs President Mahama
Award-winning sports journalist Saddick Adams, popularly known as Sports Obama, has boldly called on President John Dramani Mahama to take a hard stance on Ghana’s prison system by replicating the model used by Burkina Faso under President Ibrahim Traore.
Speaking passionately on Angel FM monitored by Ghbase News, Obama expressed disappointment that while Ghana spends millions feeding prisoners who “sit and do nothing,” Burkina Faso is using inmates to power their agricultural revolution by putting them to work on farmlands.
He argued that this move has significantly boosted food production in Burkina Faso and saved the country massive expenses.
“Burkina Faso is making real use of prisoners. They’re out on the farms, sweating and growing food. But in Ghana, we are feeding prisoners with taxpayers’ money while they contribute nothing. It’s a waste!” – Sports Obama fumed.
He then threw a direct challenge to Mahama ahead of the 2024 elections:
“If Mahama really wants to help this country, let him build the biggest prison in Ghana right in the Afram Plains—let the prisoners farm and feed the entire nation with cereals. That’s how we make prisons productive!”
Obama and his panel argued that minor offenders should not be locked up idly but rather turned into agricultural labour to help boost Ghana’s food supply chain, reduce imports, and cut down government feeding costs.
